The VJG Jewellery Awards

and the winner is.........The very best of Oscar jewellery

The Oscars is the most highly anticipated, star studded and glamorous night of the year. The world watches in awe as Hollywood kings and queens grace the red carpet. The one thing on all of our minds is “what will they wear?” The celebrities’ battle to receive the title of best dressed. Some go to great lengths to achieve this, spending millions of dollars or wearing the most outrageous creations. However no outfit is complete without the perfect accessory. That gold necklace or diamond earrings can make or break a look. So let’s count down the best, most outrageous and most expensive jewels worn to the Oscars. Welcome to the Jewellery Awards!

Most Outrageous:

Number 5 – Marisa Tomei in Van Cleef & Arpels earrings

At the 2011 Oscars, actress Marisa Tomei’s huge Van Cleef & Arpels earrings brought her a lot of media attention. She is not normally someone who wears a lot of bling, so these vintage earrings made from diamonds, emeralds and sapphires and estimated to have cost over $50,000 (roughly £32300) gives her a rightful spot in Jewellery Awards.

Number 4 – Scarlett Johanson’s Anna Hu Ring

Another example of outrageous jewels at the 2011 Oscars is the Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie ring worn by Scarlett Johansson. This statement ring featured rubies, emeralds and diamonds to form the shape of an asian dragon and matched perfectly with her Anna Hu earrings.

Number 3 – Gwenyth Paltrow in Anna Hu Cuff and Duchess Hibiscus Ring

Anna Hu is a relatively new designer to be breaking the Hollywood circuit but is proving immensely popular with the stars. This could be because of her unique and elegant designs. Another celebrity who wore her jewellery to the Oscars was Gwenyth Paltrow at the 2012 event. Her 163 carat, $1 million diamond cuff and 18-karat white gold ring earns her the number 3 spot on our list. The ring was actually by Duchess Hibiscus and was made with rose cut diamonds with purple sapphires set in. The Anna Hu cuff was made from 2368 rose cut diamonds and it’s simple yet stunning design added the final, beautiful touches to her sophisticated outfit, different to anything anyone else wore that year.

Number 2 – Elizabeth Taylor’s Van Cleef & Arpels Daisy Necklace

Hollywood legend, Dame Elizabeth Taylor comes a close second in this mesmerising daisy necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels back in 1993. Custom made, the necklace is named the Daisy Parure “Reine Marguerite”. It is made from white and coloured diamonds and chrysoprase. It was part of her £20 million jewellery collection which was auctioned off at Christie’s Auction House in London after her death in 2013.

Number 1 – Amy Adams’ Fred Leighton Necklace

And the award for the most outrageous jewellery worn at the Oscars goes to….Amy Adams’ 2009 Fred Leighton Necklace! This eye popping, huge and brightly coloured piece is unlike anything else we have seen which is why it had to be number 1. Decked out in 630 carats of sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds, this statement necklace caused a big divide between critics. But whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny it sparked conversation throughout Hollywood and the world. However, she was not the first to wear it. Beyonce actually wore these stunning jewels in an issue of Instyle magazine back in 2008. Who do you think wore it best?

Most Expensive:

Number 5 – Angelina Jolie’s Lorraine Schwartz Emerald Earrings

So onto our next award. In 5th place is Angelina Jolie with her stunning emerald Lorraine Schwartz earrings costing a whopping $2.5 million (about £1.6 million). Although she wore them back in the 2009 awards, these 115 carat jewels are still heavily sought after with many people desperate to find replicas and recreate the stunning look.
Number 4 – Charlize Theron in Harry Winston Diamond Cuffs

Charlize’s diamond cuffs complimented her elegant Dior outfit at the 2013 awards. She wore a 1959 vintage Harry Winston “cluster” bracelet, a diamond marquise lattice bracelet and a diamond lattice bracelet all set in platinum. The set cost her $4.5 million!

Number 3 – Nicole Kidman’s L’Wren Scot Diamond Necklace

Back in 2008, Australian superstar Nicole Kidman had her diamond necklace designed for her by L’Wren Scott for an amazing $7 million (£4.5 million!). This jaw dropping necklace featured over 7500 diamonds and reportedly took more than 6200 hours to hand make. This shows how much work is put in to obtain the perfect Oscar outfit!

Number 2 – Anne Hathaway’s Tiffany & Co Necklace

When Anne Hathaway presented the awards in 2011, her first outfit featured a beautiful diamond Tiffany & Co necklace. Although she had 7 outfit changes throughout the night, this one was by far the most expensive, with the 94 carat necklace costing $10 million! (£6.5 million!) However, shockingly this is not the most expensive piece of jewellery to have been worn on the Oscars red carpet.

Number 1 – Gloria Stuart’s Harry Winston Diamond Necklace

The award for most expensive jewellery worn to the oscars goes to Gloria Stuart and her $20 million Harry Winston necklace. Yes $20 million! That’s about £13 million! Gloria wore this diamond necklace to the 1998 awards. The 15-carat necklace was designed to resemble the “Heart of the Ocean” jewel from the film Titanic, for which she was nominated for the best supporting actress award!

Best Oscars Jewellery Ever

Number 5 – Lorreta Young in a Joseff Hollywood necklace

So onto our final award of the night! Loretta Young looked breath-taking at the 1948 awards in her Joseff Hollywood necklace. This diamond and white gold piece may have been worn almost 70 years ago but is still talked about and admired by many today.

Number 4 – Jennifer Aniston’s Fred Leighton Earrings and Engagement Ring

Jennifer’s 2013 Oscar outfit received a lot of criticism for being too plain and boring. Some wondered where her statement necklace was to compliment her block coloured dress, however we think her dazzling Fred Leighton earrings still looked elegant and complimented her dress beautifully. However it’s clear that the one thing everyone was really looking at was the 8-carat, $1 million engagement ring Jen was showing off at the event!

Number 3 – Jennifer O’Neil’s Bib Choker

Jennifer O’Neil presented the awards in 1975 and wore this stunning gold link choker necklace by bib. It’s definitely dramatic and we think it made her look like an Egyptian princess.

Number 2 – Beyonce’s Lorraine Schwartz Earrings

Back in 2005, Beyonce wowed the world in these beautiful and absolutely huge diamond earrings! Although she changed outfits numerous times throughout the night, she remained in the stunning pair! In fact these earrings were Schwartz’ debut on the red carpet and sealed her place as an A-lister must have!

Number 1 – Elizabeth Taylor’s Diamond Mike Todd Tiara

The award for best jewellery ever worn to the Oscars has to go to Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic Diamond Tiara. Worn to the event in 1957, it was given to her by her 3rd husband, producer Mike Todd who told her “you are my Queen”. The diamond tiara dates back to the 1800s and although they were unfashionable at the time. Elizabeth wore them to many events including the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival. In auction the tiara sold for a whopping $4,226,500 (£2742512!). Sadly its whereabouts is unknown today.

Of course, this is our personal take on Oscars jewellery. Everyone has a statement piece which sticks in their mind as ‘the best’. What’s yours?
